Prince had this Minnesota home custom-built for his mother — let's help you customize your home

This subdued, eccentric home in a Minneapolis suburb that was somewhat involved in pop culture history is looking for its new owner. Since it was built 39 years ago, the four-bedroom home in Golden Valley has only had two owners: its current sellers and the late, famous rock musician Prince. It makes a $699,900 request. The renowned "Purple Rain" singer, songwriter, producer, and native of Minnesota—born Prince Rogers Nelson—bought the land in 1985 and had his mother, Mattie Della Shaw Baker, a custom-built mansion. She resided there until her death in 2002 at the age of 68. Prince, at 57 years old, died in 2016 after an unintentional fentanyl overdose. Nevertheless, the home was owned by his estate until Alatheia Stenvik and Zachary Johnson bought it in 2020. According to the Star Tribune, a Minnesota newspaper, the husband and wife were not aware that the house was connected to Prince at all until they signed the purchase agreement. Stenvik told the publication, "It had this glamorous vibe to it unlike anything we'd seen before." "We didn't want to eliminate the glitzy appearance it had with our modifications. We desired to preserve the original look and atmosphere. The 3,231-square-foot, 2.5-bathroom address is going to be missed by the couple, who are building their own house on a farm and are heartbroken to part with it. Apart from the celebrity connection, the house has an open-concept main floor with a sunken living area that retains its original rails and chandelier, and a large kitchen with tons of storage. There are two fireplaces, one with a brick pyramid surrounding it, a two-car garage, and a deck area that may be accessible via a catwalk. Stenvik and Johnson created a bedroom in the partially finished basement and replaced the roof, gutters, and extensive carpeting during their four years there. The listing agent, Andrea Soule of Coldwell Banker Realty's Minnetonka office, told The Post, "This is a great home with its own unique place in local history." Story by Hannah Frishberg
